Parents are driving teachers up the wall

Friday, December 5, 2008, 04:16 PM GMT [General]

An art teacher has been found guilty of unprofessional conduct for suggesting a parent shove a pair of pliers "up his arse" during a row. On first hearing, this seems fair enough. But when the details of the case are outlined, it is hard not to have some sympathy.

Lee Warren had confiscated a mobile phone from a pupil because she was using it in lessons at James Hornsby High School, in Basildon, Essex.

He handed it in to reception and said the girl could have it back at the end of the day.

In the meantime, the pupil borrowed a friend's phone, and rang her father to complain. He stormed down to the school, retrieved the phone from reception, and handed it back to her. She then used it to make further calls in front of Mr Warren.

At the end of the day, the teacher, who had volunteered to carry out repairs to the school toilet and was carrying a pair of plyers, was called to reception to talk to the girl's father. A row ensued and Mr Warren uttered the unfortunate phrase.

Parent A gave evidence against him at a General Teaching Council tribunal. There was no word of a reprimand for Mr A for presumably breaking school rules about pupils possessing mobile phones during lessons.

This kind of behaviour from parents is becoming increasingly common place. I have seen complaints sent to schools about teachers who dared to raise their voice at a naughty child. Simple misunderstandings, like the child who is inadvertently overlooked as milk monitor for a few days in a row, get blown out of all proportion by anxious parents who seem intent on protecting their child from perceived slights all around them.

Official: IFS says higher tax rates will produce less tax revenue

Friday, December 5, 2008, 04:14 PM GMT [General]

Yet another voice utters a warning on raising tax rates: the Institute for Fiscal Studies' latest report states that the increase to 45 per cent in the rate of tax for those earning over £150,000 per year proposed in the Pre-Budget Report would very possibly actually reduce the amount of tax collected.

For reasons that will be familiar to all students of the Laffer Curve - Arthur Laffer's argument that raising marginal rates of taxation does not increase tax revenue but can often reduce it - the IFS is deeply sceptical about the effect of the tax rise. Not only would the highest earners be likely to take steps to avoid crossing the fatal threshold for the higher band, but the stock market - in which such earners are the heaviest investors - would also suffer a decline as a result of their loss of income. The IFS therefore concludes that "the possibility must exist that the measure [increasing the rate to 45 per cent] could lose the government income tax revenue."

This possibility also seems to have occurred to Barack Obama who has become very equivocal about his election campaign promise to raise taxes on those earning over $200,000. He has also quietly dropped his plans for a windfall tax on the big oil companies, to the fury of Leftwing bloggers and supporters. Indeed, he is rapidly arriving at precisely the position taken by John McCain during the presidential campaign: in a recession, you should not be raising anybody's taxes.

Police smash down door and ran-sack house looking for Drugs .... in vain, again

Friday, December 5, 2008, 04:14 PM GMT [General]

Police raid elderly couple's house because one of their garden plants smelt like cannabis.

Ivor and Margaret Wiltshire bought the 'moss phlox' four years ago for £2 and it quickly spread through their front and back garden.

But the common garden plant, Latin name Phlox subulata, which grows vivid pink flowers in the spring, gives off a pungent aroma similar to the drug.

Weeks later Ivor, 77, and Margaret, 79, returned home, from holiday, to find the drugs squad had battered down their front door and searched their property.

No drugs were found and a police woman later told them the moss phlox was responsible for the raid after she removed a sample for analysis.

The couple had noticed the police helicopter started frequently hovering above their home - now thought to have been looking for the heat source of a cannabis factory with infra red cameras.

The couple have lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset confirmed the raid had taken place and they had apologised but said the force could not comment further because the couple's complaint was being investigated.

    1694 and all that

Friday, December 5, 2008, 04:13 PM GMT [General]

Patrick Hennessy's  observation about dates in history in connection with current news stories, is spot-on. Cartoonists, too, relish these opportunities. And thus, I was anticipating with relish the prospect of interest rates being slashed to a level not seen since 1694. I had my Complete Book of Wigs, Lace Collars and Ruffs at the ready, but at midday precisely,  threw my quill pen at the wall in frustration when the Bank announced it was only lowering rates to the 1951 level. Drawing lots of men in bowler hats like the Thompson twins in TinTin is a lot less fun than sketching lots of Louis X1V- types.  1694 may have been a low point for interest rates but it was the high point of the wig.

    What if.....

Friday, December 5, 2008, 10:12 AM CST [General]

What if the junk mail in the snailmail  was as ridiculous as what you get in your spam mail ?

Penis enlargement & performance ads in colorful envelopes

Blackmail letters "they have  a video of you dancing naked & drunk"

Single & looking for sex ?  ( right on the envelope )

Letters that look offical stating if you mail $500 to cover the fees you inherit an tropical island.

Just think your mail delivery person would have to wear depends cuz they would be laughing so hard stuffing the penis enlargements ads in everyone's mailbox.

Would your neighbor's be peeking out the window watching for  you to get the mail so they could quit run out & try to identify the "junk mail" in your hands.

How did the spam get so crazy & out of control ?  And have you ever responded to any of it ?

T.I. - Real Housewives Of ATL - Trina

Friday, December 5, 2008, 10:09 AM CST [General]

T.I. Travels With Feds, Quits Smoking & Drinking!

T.I. appeared on the Howard Stern show today where the Atlanta rapper discussed many things including his trouble with the law, girls and even hanging out with Will Smith on election night. Stern employees pointed out that TIP had two men with him, to which T.I. admitted they were federal officers that stay with him at all times.

Although T.I. says you can have "Parton on Ice" and we can "Pop Bottles All Night," apparently he can't. T.I. told Howard Stern he no longer smokes or drinks. When Stern mentioned girls and social situations, T.I. did say he had one girl but failed to mention he was married to TINY, the former Xscape member.

NENE FROM THE REAL HOUSEWIVES: I AIN'T GET EVICTED ... IT WAS JUST ONE BIG MISUNDERSTANDING!!!

    Photobucket

Here's the official response to MediaTakeOut.com original report of her getting evicted:

The recent rumors alleging that my family faced an eviction are a huge misunderstanding and grossly inaccurate.

I am truly blessed to enjoy a wonderful life and lifestyle. We have indeed moved to another home, but we did so on our own free will.

We live in an absolutely beautiful home and we are fortunate to be able to live in the place of our choice. Unfortunately, there are many families who are facing real foreclosures and real evictions. That is not and never was the case with us.

I know where we live and how we live, and for those blessings I am humbly thankful. It is disappointing that many members of the media have chosen to report gossip instead of news.

Without wasting time on the details, the only thing I will say is that we were NOT evicted. Everybody knows that I like to be honest, real and upfront. If something was wrong, I would tell you! Thank you for your well wishes. However, please know that my family continues to be abundantly blessed, and that Miss NeNe has not skipped a beat!

Trina Hosts Toy Drive For Miami Hospital!

    Photobucket

Slip N Slide artist Trina announced today (December 3) the participation of her Diamond Doll Foundation in the 1st annual "Jingle Bell Toy Drive," a benefit drive for the children of Miami's Jackson Hospital.

To kickoff the campaign, Trina will sign autographs and collect toys at the popular Miami barbershop The Chop Shop.

Attendees who bring a new, unwrapped toy will be treated to free haircuts, and surprise appearances from special guests.

The toys will be collected by Trina herself and individually given to the convalescing children of Jackson Hospital.

The toy drive coincides with Trina's re-launching of her Diamond Doll Foundation, which focuses on educating young women on self-esteem, teen pregnancy, relationships, and community responsibility.

According to Trina, her renewed emphasis on community involvement is a direct result of her belief that entertainers have a moral responsibility to uplift the communities they influence.

"It's important for entertainers to utilize our influence to get involved and build awareness for community programs such as the Jingle Bell Toy Drive," Trina explained to AllHipHop.com. "I am putting a renewed focus and energy into the Diamond Doll foundation this coming year as we look to help the less fortunate and provide motivation for young people to improve their lives."

Trina's Jingle Bell Toy Drive is scheduled to commence at Jackson Hospital on December 14.

    Child Poverty

Friday, December 5, 2008, 04:07 PM GMT [Britain]

The Government are forever promising to lift children out of poverty. It's a wonderful objective but it seems to be an impossible dream. The country is getting ever poorer as our debts increase and the Government make no attempt to rein back borrowings.

In the past couple of months children have been making the headlines. How many people are fooled by Government propaganda that these are exceptional cases of children being beaten and abused? Almost every radio programme covering one social issue or another is dominated by single mothers. Just how many children are living in single parent households now? If it's as high as most people suspect, more children  must be suffering and with a greater chance of getting battered or abused than in any previous modern era.

Women with children trapped in rotten relationships or circumstances are vulnerable and may resort to desperate measures. A benefit's system that is 'on tap' gives women the opportunity to try and make it on their own but this is doomed from the start. They can never find the time or money to get a job, if indeed they want one,  that pays sufficient to pull them out of the poverty trap. In fact , all they achieve is how to exploit the system. It doesn't take much imagination to understand how single mothers in their attempt to remain vibrant women pull in and attract the wrong types of men and friends.

A broken society and child poverty are, in my opinion, closely linked as is child abuse and even murder. Children who survive and grow up in this kind of environment will do what comes naturally to them. Unlikely to be well educated they become the misfits and social nuisances that already beset our schools and cities.

All the Government enquiries in the world will not solve this problem unless and until children of single parents , who are the most likely to be impoverished, are identified and tracked from the earliest stage of development through nursery, school and into young adulthood. The cost of doing this is enormous but in the long term may actually be cost effective.

Even if the Government actually wanted to do something positive to arrest this rise in child poverty and address a breakdown in social structures they have no money to invest in such a massive social programme.

Is there a sensible alternative that stops short of draconian measures?

I know I haven't been around much lately. I was so bussy with custom orders and christmas sales that I simply did not have the time to update my blog or to visit other people's blogs. Which I missed because I really enjoy to read what keeps people bussy.

    Let. It. Lie.

Friday, December 5, 2008, 11:03 AM EST [General]

    My friend is dying.

My brilliant, funny and loving friend is dying.  And rather quickly, I might add.  I saw her yesterday for the first time in a few weeks, and she looked like an entirely different person.  Her face and neck were bloated to distortion.  Her complexion has turned a pasty yellow.  Her stomach is hugely distended, jutting out from the bed where she lies flat on her back.  She is dying, and I am being told by the old-timers in this program that I need to back away now.  That horrible things will happen if I don't let it go.  Let it lie.  Let her die.

There's a part of me that gets it.  I've been around the rooms long enough to know that someone will get you drunk quicker than you'll get them sober.  I know that the people who know me ... who really know me .... are aware of the horribly ironic time-frame of all of this, and know that I'm aware as well.  I know that they're looking out for me and my best interest.  That they want me to get through this holiday season in one piece.  With my heart still beating.

Then there's the other part of me ...

The part that refuses to ignore the fact that one of her best friend's is dying.  That doesn't believe that we've exhausted all our options.  That needs to be able to look her daughter in the eye and tell her that I did everything I could ... that I took every opportunity I had to help her mother save her own life.  That doesn't understand how someone can weigh potentials, ("She could have AIDS, Rachel") against inevitables ("She's going to die, and she's going to die soon.")  How does that equation even work???

I've known my friend for almost ten years, and have watched her take the most difficult path each and every time.  If there were three options in front of her - easy, medium and difficult - she'd always choose the difficult way ... or the fourth option, complete and utter inaction.  You could say to her: "You can either take the elevator, walk up five flights of stairs or scale the wall," and she'll tell you that she's going to scale the wall.  And then half-way up, she'll just hang there lifeless - not able to complete the climb, but too stubborn to come down.

    I've been there.

I'm sure a lot of us have.  Sometimes we do it to punish ourselves.  Sometimes we really are at a loss for seeing the clearer path.  And sometimes, we take the hard way so that when we fail we can say, "But it was so hard!" and then feel a little bit better about ourselves.

Still ... despite knowing all of this ... and understanding it ... I've found myself at a complete and utter loss when it comes to dealing with this situation.  I have more questions than answers, and never know what the next right thing is.  I don't know what to do or say - to her or her family.  I don't even know what to say to my friends (all of whom are well-intentioned, but some of whom are seriously beginning to piss me off).

    I'm uncomfortable.  Confused.  And scared.

And I just needed to share that today.

    Thanks for being here.
